DISCOVER SPLIT, CROATIA

Naturally Curious

Pomalo! That means “take it easy” in Croatian—and trust me, once you arrive in Split, you’ll understand why it’s the national vibe. This seaside city along the Dalmatian Coast is all about slowing down, soaking in the sunshine, and letting each day unfold with a little magic.

Start your mornings with an espresso along the Riva promenade, then dive into the rich history of Diocletian’s Palace, where you can wander ancient alleyways, stumble upon live music in the square, or dance under the stars.

Spend your afternoons exploring the nearby islands, enjoying a beachside lunch, or catching golden-hour sunsets that will honestly stop you in your tracks.

Split is the perfect base for adventure, chill days, and a little bit of both. Keep scrolling for my top recs on what to do, eat, and know before you go.

What to Know:

  • Split is a laid-back city, and pomalo living applies to everything—including service at restaurants. Don’t expect your bill to arrive the second you finish eating. Instead, take your time and ask for the check when you're ready—locals appreciate a slow, relaxed pace.

  • Tipping isn’t obligatory, but it’s appreciated—round up or leave 10% if you’re happy with the service. Tap water is safe to drink (Croatia has some of the best quality water in Europe), so skip the plastic bottles when you can. Split is generally very safe, with low rates of violent crime, but as with any tourist destination, keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas.

  • It’s always a good idea to learn a few basic Croatian phrases—it shows respect, and locals will love you for it. Even a simple “Hvala” (thank you) or “Dobar dan” (good day) goes a long way.

There’s no shortage of unforgettable moments in Split, but if you do one thing—go island hopping. No questions asked. Book a boat tour or hop on a ferry to explore the Blue Lagoon, Hvar, or even spend a night on one of the nearby islands.

Diocletian’s Palace is the heart of the city and a must for history buffs (and Game of Thrones fans—many scenes were filmed right here!). Sign up for a walking tour or just get lost in its ancient maze of stone walls, shops, and hidden wine bars. Don’t miss dancing in the Peristil Square—it’s a vibe, especially with live music at night.

Explore the buzzing Green Market, feel the coastal glamour as you stroll the Riva Promenade (yes, locals do dress up for their Saturday coffee walks), and rub the big toe of Grgur Ninski for a little extra good luck.

Nature lovers, you're in for a treat—Marjan Hill offers hiking and scenic views, or take a day trip to Krka National Park for waterfalls that rival any you've ever chased. Want more adrenaline? Try cliff jumping, rafting, or a dreamy sunset cruise with wine in hand.

Whether you’re diving into history, soaking up the sea, or dancing under the stars, Split makes it easy to fall in love with the Croatian way of life.

What to Eat & Drink:

While Croatia may not be the first country that comes to mind for cuisine, Split still knows how to satisfy. Seafood is the star, and the must-try dish is crni rižot—a rich black ink risotto made with cuttlefish or squid. You’ll also find standout grilled octopus, hearty meat stews, and fresh catches served up at local konobas (traditional taverns).

For sweet cravings, don’t miss Luka Ice Cream & Cakes—their creamy pistachio gelato is a local obsession and totally worth the hype. Coffee culture is strong here, too. Grab a cappuccino or espresso at D16 Coffee—a cozy local favorite just steps from the Palace.

When it comes to drinks, an Aperol Spritz on the promenade is practically a rite of passage, but also try a Pelinkovac (a local herbal liqueur) or sip on crisp Croatian white wines like Pošip or Malvazija. Whether you're toasting at a beach bar or watching the world go by at a café, Split serves its flavors with a side of coastal charm.
