Whether you're chasing sunsets, waterfall dips, or soul-soothing jungle vibes—this checklist will help you pack smart and stress-free. Bali's climate, culture, and terrain all call for thoughtful items (yes, even bug spray and sarongs!). You'll find most of these itmes on my Travel Essentials page here. I also created a fashionista quick guide here some of my Island Vibes faves and things you'll actually need! Here’s what to bring:
👗 Clothing Essentials
Do not overpack! I made the mistake thinking I need all these instagrammable outfits and I wore maybe half of what I packed. Also, remind yourself about versatality and comfort. No one wears heels here. You will get weird looks and stick out like a sore thumb. I wore comfortable sandals, one cute gold pair for night time outfits, gym shoes for hiking, and water shoes. You could really get away with gym shoes as I think I wore mine once and opt for a pair of sandals that can also be worn while hiking like Sorelle- cute, comfy, and functional.
I try to buy neutrals for travel clothes and add pops of color with sunglasses, jewelry, and other accessories.
Lightweight, breathable outfits (cotton or linen is key)
Flowy dresses or jumpsuits
Bathing suits (2–3)
Beach cover-up
Sarong/ light weight scarf (great for temples and beach)- a two for one item you WILL use a lot. Use as a skirt, a shoulder cover up, or a beach cover up.
Yoga clothes or activewear
One “nice” outfit for dinner or nights out
Light rain jacket or poncho (just in case)
Comfy sandals + slip-on shoes
Water shoes or Tevas (for waterfalls, boat trips)
Flip flops
Optional: one pair of sneakers or hiking sandals for more active adventures
I love body jewelry and it adds a little flair to any outfit! I've been sportin bodychains and belly chains since I was in high school and I'm telling you these are perfect for this island
☀️ Toiletries & Health Must-Haves
Reef-safe sunscreen
Bug/Mosquito spray (look for natural or DEET options)
Aloe vera or after-sun lotion
Basic meds: anti-diarrhea, ibuprofen, antihistamines: No NOT forget these- you WILL need them
Electrolyte packets (Bali Belly recovery tip!): Do Not skip these!
Your fave face wipes or micellar water
Hand sanitizer
Hair ties + dry shampoo (humidity = frizz!)
Reusable razor + menstrual products (they do not sell tampons in Bali due to religious beliefs)
💡 Tech + Travel Gear
Waterproof phone case (for boats/snorkeling)
Lightweight daypack or tote bag
Fanny pack or crossbody for temples/markets
Reusable water bottle (many hotels offer filtered water)
Sunglasses + hat (sun can be intense)
Earplugs for music shows but also trust me—roosters are early risers!
🧘♀️ Optional But Helpful
Eye mask for flights or early sunrises
Travel towel or sarong (some excursions don't provide)
Journal or book
Dry bag (great for waterfall days or beach gear)
Small lock for hostel lockers or shared spaces
Polaroid or waterproof camera
Snorkel gear (optional – can rent locally too)
📱 Apps + Travel Tips
Grab (ride-sharing)
Google Translate for Bahasa phrases
WhatsApp for communicating with drivers or hosts
XE Currency Converter
Don’t forget to unlock your phone before arriving if using a SIM
💬 Final Note:
Pack light, dress modestly for temples, and leave room for the beautiful handmade pieces you’ll want to bring home. Trust me, you WILL shop and bring home some beautifl artwork, handbags, trinkits, clothing, swimwear, new shoes, and whatever else your heart fancies. Bali is casual and easygoing—just like the trip you’re about to take.
I have been asked by many travelers about what to pack so I though this guide would be helpful for first time travelers. If you liked this, please leave a comment and let me know- this helps me understand if I should create more content like this.
With love,
Tiffany
